How to Read a Condiment Label: What to Look For and What to Avoid
Most people never read condiment labels. Here is what to look for — and what to avoid — when choosing a condiment that is actually good for you.
How to Read a Condiment Label: What to Look For and What to Avoid
Most people choose condiments based on brand recognition or habit. They reach for the same ketchup, the same ranch, the same BBQ sauce they have always used — without ever reading the label.
Here is what you would find if you did.
The Sugar Problem
Ketchup: The second ingredient in most ketchup brands is high fructose corn syrup. A single tablespoon has 4 grams of sugar.
BBQ sauce: Most BBQ sauces have 10–16 grams of sugar per two-tablespoon serving. That is more than a chocolate chip cookie.
Honey mustard: The honey is pure sugar. Most honey mustard has 6–8 grams of sugar per serving.
Teriyaki sauce: 8–12 grams of sugar per tablespoon.
Sweet relish: 5 grams of sugar per tablespoon.
What to Look For on a Condiment Label
Ingredients list: Ingredients are listed in order of quantity. If sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or corn syrup appears in the first five ingredients, the condiment is primarily a sugar delivery vehicle.
Nutrition facts: Look at the "Total Sugars" line. Anything above 2 grams per serving is worth questioning.
Serving size: Manufacturers often use unrealistically small serving sizes to make the sugar content look lower. A "1 tablespoon" serving size for a sauce that most people use 3–4 tablespoons of is misleading.
What Shoppers Look for on a Label
When comparing condiments, review the ingredient list and nutrition facts directly. There is no single standard for ingredient preferences, so focus on the details that matter to you:
- No high fructose corn syrup
- No artificial colors or flavors
- No preservatives beyond what is necessary
- Recognizable ingredients
- 0g or minimal added sugar
Rather than relying on front-of-package claims, check the ingredients list directly.
